I need help with understanding the whole game's story, and if someone can explain it I would really be grateful.

What I especially don't understand is this thing with the Azoth, what is it really? Why is she chased by Riccardo and Lorenzo? What are their plans with Fiona?

I do understand all of this to a decent degree, but when my sister asked me to explain the story to her, I simply couldn't because I didn't understand lots of things myself.

Azoth is never explained in the game I think, but essentially it's like the essence of life. That, what gives you feelings and your senses, which Daniella is lacking.
*My* theory is that every normal human has azoth, but Fiona has a special one as she is the descent of an alchemist, you know? So they chase her because her azoth is especially compatible, because they are related.
Lorenzo wants to suck it out of her as he did with Riccardo and Riccardo's body is so broken as he was created with False Azoth(this is extracted from animals, like dogs and he has to refresh it) so he chooses to be rather reborn with it, so Fiona has to get pregnant by him. Alchemist Azoth is given from parents to children, so Fiona would loose her Azoth when giving it to her child and that would make her probably mortal.

That's at least what I understood from the information that was posted on here some time.
But there isn't a real official explanation, I think.

You can research Azoth, it does exist actually. But Haunting Ground took it out of it's own context. "Azoth was considered to be a universal medicine or universal solvent sought in alchemy." That's why there's always Mercury/Hermes's caduceus in the video game, because it symbolizes Azoth, or, universal medicine.

Also, the plot is really difficult to understand at first for everyone I think. You can make up whatever theories and discuss what you think with other fans, it's really fun.

The most basic thing I think I could tell you is that Riccardo has almost a jealousy to his "brother" Ugo. They might feel as if they killed Fiona's father that they can claim her almost like an item and use her for their own gain. Debilitas just chases Fiona because he likes pretty dolly like things, Fiona is the ultimate super awesome doll he can put in his collection. Daniella seeks out Fiona because she feels if she obtains this "azoth" that is located inside of Fiona, she might please her master a lot more and become this "perfect women". As for Riccardo he wants to be reborn using Fiona's womb, because apparently, he will be born again as a much more powerful being (which is what I got from that.) I don't really want to get into reasons for Lorenzo (way to much to tell).

But yeah, if you want, you can look up azoth more and see to a greater clarification then what I told you. But basically, it's just the term for medicine in general, in an alchemy view point.

Glad I helped you out a bit, it was a bit confusing when I first started playing too.

It's been so long since I last played, but from what I understood, the Azoth had to do with 'immortality,' or at least some version of it. I could be totally misremembering this, but I thought that in the library during Daniella's segment, Fiona finds Lorenzo's journal and it dates him as inhumanly old.

Azoth can be many different things, and to me it's a soul. I get the feeling that everyone that play haunting ground get different ideas with azoth and what it is. Which I really like. It shows howthe game lets us think on our own. Me like!

And when you get azoth you like. . boost your own soul so that you get young again. That's how I see it anyways XD it's just a theory. hehe >:3

Anyway, Azoth is as they say in the game "essence of life". A soul, I think. XD And everyone is after fiona since she has a pure azoth. And everyone in the castle wants it.

I used to think it was something in Fiona's tummy! Since all of the stomach close ups and when she's nervous she covers it like she's protecting it. I really like everyone's different opinions on what a Haunting Ground azoth can be. xP

Well, I think the emphasis on her stomach comes from the idea that it lies in her uterus, or can be passed on from childbirth, as Riccardo implies.

Totally agree with you. She seriously has to have something in her belly. But that's just what I think. :3 You never know if she has something or not. I think so though.

If you'd like I could type up a tl;dr-esque to explain what I've always thought the story was about but I hate things that are really long sometimes so I know how it is.
