    Alice: Madness Returns *New Thread*

Post by Hellequin on 2011-02-15, 09:24

Making a new one because..well because! We have had a title for a while now so I believe it is time for a new one.

My hands are shaking as I'm finding the time to type this. Words cannot express how excited I am, it's been highly highly anticipated and just *jumps about like a little girl* THIS IS WHAT WE'VE WANTED!

This is what I wanted. As a personal stand-point this is what I've been hoping, the reason is this game is blowing away all expectations I had previously. It's going above what I wanted.

You can easily find all three trailers online, the new one just recently released.

    Trailer 1

    Trailer 2

    Trailer 3

You'll likely be able to see a high-quality one of the newest trailer soon enough. On their Facebook (while I don't have a facebook account I regularly check this one for this same reason.) we've been given some neato stuff. Like a small Valentine's image but also the link to the MSNBC page had new SCREENS. Featuring the new weapon the Hobby Horse, shows Elite Guards and the Executioner.

As well as a new dress for Alice, going by what has been said she'll have many.

The logo is BEAUTIFUL. I love how it keeps the original font but amplifies it to this generation, the vorpal blade inclusion is fabulous.

Discuss this if you want, I'm likely the only one on this forum who cares for this game but hoping you'll wanna take a look!

You have one happy admin now guys XD I doubt I'll be able to sleep now.

Alice looked so fierce when she stabbed the table, and her face at the end...<333

They've also got an artbook coming out, which particularly excited me because I love art, I pre-ordered it months ago but we've no date yet.

Freaking awesome, any idea on an actual release date? Other than just this year? (Though it's apparently shaping up to be a great year for games.)

I KNOW. The only possible thing that could out shine this game for me would be if Haunting Ground had anything new coming. Which we know won't happen.

    I'm so excited.

Everything looks so beautiful, gothic and really AmericanMcGee-esque!
    I love it.

And it looks like they didnt forgot how great the first game was like.
I'm sure this game will rock!

Of course they didn't forget. Spicy Horse and Mr. McGee have this thing down, for sure.

I want it too..I check everything daily and sometimes it's best to avoid it but it's so hard not to constantly look it up in hopes for something more.

Just yesterday I finally discovered some answers to questions I had been debating on. Like how old Alice is, what the moves and other game mechanics would be, and the voice actors.

In an interview with R.J Berg, (two different ones actually) He mentioned Alice is a young adult. I think a lot of people, including myself had taken this sentence in the wrong light - "Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice’s family from her and left her mind horrifically scarred. " I (or we) thought that Madness Returns took place eleven years after the original game but I think we're wrong. Another sentence says "Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release—yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event."

So I think the answer is 11 years after the fire, and 10 years being the time she spent in Rutledge. Not a 10 or 11 year difference between the games. He said we left Alice in the first game as a teenager, and now she's in her 20's. If you went and used the numbers 10 and 11 and placed Alice in her teens you'd end up with an Alice in her late 20's in the game. In the second interview I watched he gave actual numbers to go along with his comment about 20's before. He said she's "23/24" so it's safe to assume Alice is about 23 or 24.

    The official website gave more info on the things she'd be able to do;

    • Magical abilities: Obtain peculiar abilities in Wonderland such as floating with Alice’s dress, shrinking, or growing to towering sizes in order to crush enemies.

And she'll also be able to collect teeth from fallen enemies (I've also read 'roses' but I'm not going to confirm it until I see it elsewhere) and use them as currency for the realm.

We also get to run around in London too, we've gotten to see a screen of that though.

Also! Susie is back, and I think Roger is too.

Susie Brann and Roger L. Jackson.

The voice actors for Alice and Cheshire. Roger did more voices in the game as well, Susie has been confirmed to return and Roger is the harder one to decipher from the gameplay video. I believe he is returning though.

Ok, I looked at some of the videos and pictures again.
I just was 2 things that hopefully change before the release.

    1. Her hair structure isnt really 2011 (I mean her ingame hair)
It just looks too thin and stringy.

    2. She is too thin.
I know its supposed to be like that but its just too much.
Look at her hip! Its like 4 centimeters!
    It just looks too unnatural.

    Do not double post.

And actually her hair is actually fine. I think it's in the process, but depending on which screen you're looking at, in the new screens it's not stringy at all. Alice has always had hair similar to that so I don't really know what '2011' is supposed to mean. Her hair has always looked like that but if you're wanting it to look like in the trailers...it's not going to. The Shy the Sun trailers have nothing to do with the game graphics wise or 'story'.

As for her body it's the art style. Look at her in the trailers, her body isn't normal looking. In the art her feet are so small, same as in-game and the trailers. It's just how she looks.

I highly doubt they're messing with character models at this stage in production. They've been working on it for over 2 years. I think for them Alice's model is done especially now that the game is only months away from release. It's like they're either tweaking the smallest details (which doesn't include Alice..or it might but doesn't seem likely) with gameplay and finer graphical details.

On Thursday we'll have more. Probably some Gameplay because there is an embargo on the info from GDC 2011.

A lot of games sometimes wait out their release. Like games are finished and it's just waiting to ship out. Not sure if MR is like that but it might be very soon.

I watched the videos and the trailers again and again.
I love the stage design, its probably one of the best.

But the Alice Design sucks.I don't like the way she looks.I prefer her orginal McGee Design from the first game.

But I know I will still love it, even though its not the Alice (probably more the character model)I loved.

Actually it is. The dress is either level specific, or optional for us to choose. It was said early on we'd get more dresses.

EDIT: And teeth might buy us the dresses because we upgrade our weapons so why not using teeth to buy new dresses? Some seem to give abilities.

What do you mean with "it is" ?
    And who is teeth?

All in all I just wished they revamped the Alice model they used for the first game.
Like they did with Claire Redfield in Resident Evil (they took the character model from RE2, added more polygons, made her HD and more 3D)

I loved her huuuuge eyes and the way her dress looked.
The new outfit/outfits (the other one we could already see) looks to cartoon for me.
But everyone has a different taste I guess

I'm just happy to see some new parts of Wonderland! <3

    It is the original Alice.

They didn't reuse the original model but she looks practically the same only upgraded to a 2010/2011 look. I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure Spicy Horse doesn't have the coding or anything from the original. The original Alice didn't use mocap either. This one does.

Teeth - I mean 'teeth'. Literally teeth, it's the currency of the realm. You pick of teeth from the ground and use it for upgrades. Pretty sure some enemies have them as well.

I wasn't originally happy about the 2D stylized cut-scenes. The new trailer had shown me how they look and I really do like them, plus we do get cut-scenes from in-game.

    There's a lot of new outfits;

    - Alice's classic blue dress and white pinafore
    - The Heart dress // The red dress from the demo
    - A White 'Banshee' dress // It looks sort of depressing with the running make-up and blood
    - A White straightjacket dress with the 'bald' Alice // Thinking like most people this is a memory
    - A Blue 'floral' dress // Looks like it's heavy on Chinese influence
    - A White and Pink doll dress // It looks a little weird to me, mostly because when it comes to the color pink I'm very picky but the giant doll she was going toe to toe with drove my eyes to it. Not gonna like that level.
    - A Black Steampunk dress // It's hard to see the details but it looks like a Steampunk dress with cogs adorned.
    - A stripped Black and White dress // Alice's 'London' real world attire.

London!Alice is actually gaunt and sickly. Her hair made think that it's slowly growing back after being shaved. I'm most likely wrong on that but it seems to be logical right now. Especially because in Wonderland Alice is strong, beautiful and the idealized version of herself.

Susie's voice in the opening lines really made me feel for Alice. Definite emotion and I loved it.

Huge eyes are nice but thank-god she doesn't look like an anime character. I would've been upset about that. She does remind me of a ball-jointed-doll and resincarnating (yes resincarnate. Emphasis on 'resin' because it's not reincarnation but 'resin' is what ball-jointed dolls are made from and the term was cute and more fitting when you say "making a bjd into a character") her will be easy to do.

I noticed the weapons look a bit different. Hobby Horse looked like a literal plaything during the shot she was fighting a blob/doll with Ex!Guard in the back. Maybe the weapons start out as toys and we upgrade them to what they've seemed to be.

I think there are a few different places we'll be going. London, Wonderland,
    Spoiler:
Vale of Tears that becomes the Vale of Doom after it was defiled by the Infernal Train so a darker wonderland
and Memories which could be from Wonderland to London to maybe even prior to the fire.

Cheshire's model has improved since the alpha and Rabbit's seemed to have been revealed long before thanks to an image on the site.

    Spoiler:

Hatter is back to normal actually. Shy the Sun's trailers did not use the in-game models. The gif is repeated and moves fast in FireFox.

    Spoiler:
gif. belongs to kevinkenosis @ the AMA Forums.

June 14th cannot come soon enough. 101 days soon to be 100 days. The artbook will tide us over and might even spoil something things but I'll likely spend the month of May glued to the beautiful book.

If you look at her hair at 3:20

    http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/03/04/alice-madness-returns-gameplay-demo-part-2?objectid=14323746

Thats what I mean with "it's not 2011 style".
If you look at Resident Evil 5's Character Models for example (the game is older than Alice Madness Returns)you notice that they could have exhaust all the possibilities you have with todays graphic. I mean everything else looks so fine-grained except her face and hair.
Its so funny when you look closely because you have to notice that.

Her hair and face are fine. To me, you have your opinions and I my own but with her face and hair in that video one thing that needs to be noted is that we're watching the video through a camera.

If we watched it directly on our own screens or TV and not a TV being recorded and watching the recording, you'd see her face in true detail. Everything looks high in contrast and saturation because of the camera.

Every company has their own design and this is clearly their own. Since she is very thin and her eyes are very big etc she has a very rare look. Which could be a good thing. It clearly show that the makers wanted her to be rare and remebered. If alice looked like everyone else I think it wouldn't be well remembered. Besides, I am not sure if those who made the game is a big company, but making a game is very expensive. >_<

I think her hair/design is great looking! ♥

...About the comments on Alice looking too skinney or her hair not being like how Resident Evil 5 graphics are, Alice: Madness Returns is not going for a "realistic" look like Resident Evil does.

Alice: Madness Returns is way more stylized and so Alice looks so herself. She's suppose to look a little "Cartoony". Its not suppose to look realistic to a T. Also I don't understand why people these days think realistic is the only way to go. I've seen tons of stylized games that blow "realistic graphics" out of the water.

I don't see why you used Clair Redfield's model as an argument for keeping the look. Claire's design for both games she appeared in was greatly altered to be more modernized in Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles. Especially her outfit in Resident Evil 2.

    And that's completely fine =)

Sorry; but a lot of people are taking this game and bitching about it because they're about the graphics (which Hillary's post pretty much stats the facts) or how it plays.

It's all about the art style.
